Human-Animal Relationships: Understanding The Companion Animal Bond

Christina Beatrice, Salem State University

Abstract

My study looked at the relationships between companion animals and humans, specifically to see if there was a relationship between canines and humans' perceived health. I collected survey information from participants which measured closeness to pets, belief that dogs are related to being healthy, if the participant owns a dog, and—if so—the length of the ownership. Closeness was significantly positively correlated with Belief and Ownership length. Length was significantly positively correlated with Belief and Age. This supports the idea that an increased intimacy with dogs has a relationship with a belief in health.
